Back to Business - January 17, 2001 Now that Jack Perdue is up and running again, relieving me of my duties as fill-in gossip columnist, it's been a productive week, and I can once again use my production diary to bore you with the minutiae of my day-to-day editing work. Our 3D animation artist, George Kelly, finally returned from his long Christmas holiday in France, and he is once again at work. I've posted a very rough QuickTime movie of the latest draft of the Baker Killing section, but it comes with many qualifications, to be fair to George. First, the sample here is a collection of first and second passes, and at one point you'll even see a text note ("FLASH BAKER") from me to George to show him where I want an indication of Officer Baker's presence. The sequence also switches in and out of brightly lit "draft mode," which is pretty distracting. Second, overall the resolution is poor and the end is especially dark. . In other words--it doesn't look like a movie yet. (To get a better idea of the eventual look of this stuff in the actual movie, see the JPEGs posted in my December 13 diary entry.) I'm just posting it here to give the curious a window into the process. I'll be giving notes to George today on the sequence, and we'll go through yet another draft of it. (FYI, the voices on the soundtrack are the Rev. Keith Charles, a member of Citizens for Truth, and David James, now president of Citizens for Action.)
Speaking of multiple drafts, Larry O'Keefe, the composer of the film score, asked me to post his latest remix of his Main Title theme, to see what people think. So here it is. This mix is more orchestral and builds up to a bigger climax than the original version I posted in December. That's all for this week. I've got work to do. As always, feel free to write in with your thoughts.
Best,
