BEYOND THE DVD: Online Bonus Materials

Welcome to the virtual "2nd DVD" of Nothing So Strange bonus materials. In addition to the special features included on the DVD, the filmmakers have added other items here to deepen the experience of "Nothing So Strange," and more will be added on an ongoing basis. (Haven't bought the DVD yet? You can buy it here.)

You likely noticed that nowhere on the Nothing So Strange DVD itself is there an acknowledgement that the events depicted are not real. Even the DVD's official commentary track is an "in-character" drama involving director Brian Flemming and "activists" David James and Debra Meagher. Here at the virtual 2nd DVD, however, we'll break the fourth wall sometimes in order to relate compelling information about the movie.

All content on this page is BitPass-enabled. BitPass is a "micropayment" system that allows independent artists such as the Nothing So Strange filmmakers to offer content "a la carte" for low prices, instead of requiring subscriptions or resorting to advertising. This page is an experiment to see if the micropayment model works to deliver material such as you see below, which likely would not have been created or distributed through traditional methods. At least 85% of the purchase price of the items you buy here goes straight to the makers of Nothing So Strange, so that they can continue to create material like this.

Problems? If you have BitPass-specific questions, please see the BitPass Spender FAQ or BitPass Customer Support. If for some reason you unsatisfied with a specific item you have purchased here, please go to your BitPass Spender account, find the item in question and register a complaint for that specific item. Through BitPass, we will resolve the problem or issue a full refund.

In this additional commentary track, Brian and David relate many behind-the-scenes stories, including what it feels like to go "reality hacking" at a Police Commission meeting, the secret meanings of many of the names in "Nothing So Strange" and the pleasures and pitfalls of shooting without a script. Formally known as the Report of the Los Angeles County District Attorney on the Murder of William H. Gates III, this document outlines the official version of the Bill Gates assassination and aftermath. Director Brian Flemming wrote this report before production started, basing much of the tone and structure on the infamous Warren Report on the assassination of President Kennedy. The Garcetti Report served as a script of sorts for Nothing So Strange.

The Nothing So Strange cast and crew "reality-hacked" the 2000 Democratic National Convention in order to shoot the march and protest rally in the movie. "Anatomy of a Fake," narrated by director Brian Flemming, is a revealing look at the audacity and ingenuity employed to get one of the most impressive scenes in the movie. This mini-documentary contains footage never seen before--including camera angles that reveal just how different the situation was in real life than it appears on screen.

In their alternate commentary track in the section above, director Brian Flemming and actor/co-producer David James talk about their trip to Dallas in 1999 to research JFK conspiracy theorists. That trip had a lasting influence on the development of Nothing So Strange. On video, Brian and David interviewed more than a dozen figures involved in the study of the JFK assassination. They also created this short piece, "JFK: The Ride," that examines the commercialization of the JFK assassination they encountered in Dealey Plaza--specifically, a tour guide who offers "surround sound" rides through the kill zone in a replica of President Kennedy's limousine. (More pieces from Brian and David's trip to Dallas are to come.)
