The New York premiere of NOTHING SO STRANGE will be July 21, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. Winner of the New York Times Claiborne Pell Award for Original Vision at the 2002 Newport Film Festival, NOTHING SO STRANGE is receiving rave reviews from critics and moral condemnation from some right-wing pundits. This "crackling good movie" (Variety) follows the efforts of private citizens to determine the truth behind the murder of Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, who was shot dead in Los Angeles on December 2, 1999, allegedly by an African American assassin hell-bent on starting a class war. But the grass-roots group Citizens for Truth doubts the official version of the event and launches a year-long investigation into the murder. Directed by Brian Flemming (co-writer of the off-Broadway hit “Bat Boy” and co-founder of the alternative film festival Slumdance), the film has been praised as “a brilliant, one-of-a-kind faux documentary” by the Boston Phoenix and “a genre-bending experience” by the Austin Chronicle. Fox News host Neil Cavuto, in an on-air interview with star Laurie Pike, condemned the film as “dangerous,” and the New York Post called NOTHING SO STRANGE “uncomfortably realistic.” Bill Gates said through a spokesman, “It is very disappointing that a movie maker would do something like this.” NOTHING SO STRANGE debuted at the 2002 Slamdance Film Festival and has also been an official selection of South by Southwest, Taos Talking Picture Festival, Newport Film Festival, Florida Film Festival, San Francisco IndieFest, Birmingham Cinematheque, Idaho International Film Festival, and the Independent Film Festival of Boston. In addition to an official site at www.nothingsostrange.com, the film has a complex web "universe" that Wired called "brilliant and ingenious." The web universe, which includes dozens of URLS, treats the premise of the film as real and includes research and conspiracy theories contributed both by the filmmakers and by fans.
